A smash burger joint people love and could not spell

ZOJAH Burger is a family owned smash burger restaurant on Huebner Road in San Antonio, and it came to restaurant SEO with a reputation already earned. Fresh smash patties, hot chicken sandwiches, thick shakes, dine in, pickup and delivery, open until eleven every night. The food was never in question: 2,484 Google reviews averaging 4.7 stars, and the profile's own summary quotes customers on the crispy edges.

Restaurant SEO is a strange discipline because a restaurant's search demand splits three ways, and each way needs a different answer. There are people who already know the name and are trying to find it. There are people who are hungry and have no brand in mind at all, typing burgers near me. And there are people already looking at the Business Profile, deciding in about four seconds whether to tap directions or scroll to the next listing. Most restaurant websites answer only the first group, badly.

What was working

  • 2,484 Google reviews at 4.7 stars, an enormous trust asset in a category where reviews decide everything
  • Real demand for the brand name already showing in Search Console
  • Pickup, delivery, Uber Eats and DoorDash all live and running
  • Photography good enough to sell a burger on a phone screen

What needed work

  • A brand name almost nobody spells right on the first try, and every misspelling was a lost customer
  • No pages built for the neighbourhoods that actually feed the restaurant
  • A menu that lived inside the homepage instead of being a destination Google could rank
  • A Business Profile doing far less work than 2,484 reviews should buy
The Platform

A site built to make people hungry and then make ordering obvious

ZOJAH Burger San Antonio website homepage built by the FOG Digital Marketing team
The ZOJAH Burger homepage. Order online sits in the header, the hero sells the product, and the menu is one tap away from anywhere on the site.

The menu is a page, not a PDF

The menu earned 46,887 impressions and 1,263 clicks at an average position of 2.6 on its own. That only happens when the menu is a real indexable page with real item names on it. A restaurant SEO build that buries the menu in a downloadable file throws away the second most valuable page on the entire site.

Every path to an order stays visible

Dine in, pickup, delivery, Uber Eats and DoorDash are all reachable from the header and repeated through the page. Hungry people do not hunt. The job of restaurant SEO is to win the search; the job of the site is to make the next tap unmissable once they arrive.

The Strategy

Four moves that fit how people actually search for food

The FOG Digital Marketing team built the programme around the three kinds of hungry searcher rather than around a keyword list.

STEP 01

Own the name in every spelling

Zojah, Zohan, Zoha, Zoja, Zojan, Zorah, Zonah, Soja. Every one of those is a real search someone ran this year, and the site now sits at an average position of about 1.1 on all of them. Nobody types a misspelling twice, so the first result has to be right the first time.

STEP 02

Build the neighbourhoods, not the city

Dedicated pages for smash burgers in San Antonio, burgers near UTSA and burgers near the Medical Center. Restaurant SEO is decided inside a three mile radius, and a page written for one campus beats a page that lists twenty neighbourhoods.

STEP 03

Make the menu compete on its own

The menu got its own page, its own items, its own descriptions and its own place in the sitemap, because zojah burger menu alone is 5,097 impressions and the page now holds position 2.0 for it.

STEP 04

Let the Business Profile close

Menu, order pickup, order delivery, directions and hours all wired and current on the profile, matched to the site. For a restaurant the profile is not a listing, it is the checkout counter, and Google's own guidance on local business structured data is the spec we build to.

The Proof

What the restaurant SEO data shows

Live data pulled from Google Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile on 7 September 2026, comparing the last six months against the six months before.

Restaurant SEO results in Google Search Console for ZOJAH Burger, six months against the prior six months
Google Search Console, last six months against the prior six: 11,100 clicks against 6,940, and 152,000 impressions against 62,100.

Restaurant SEO clicks up 60 percent, visibility up 145 percent

Search clicks went from 6,940 to 11,100, a 60 percent increase, on impressions that rose from 62,100 to 152,000. The most recent three months came in at 5,890 clicks and 87,600 impressions against 5,220 and 64,400 in the three before that, so the line is still climbing rather than flattening after one good quarter. Across the full sixteen months of history the site has drawn 18,100 clicks from 214,000 impressions at an average position of 5.

Why click through rate fell while everything else rose

Average CTR moved from 11.2 percent to 7.3 percent and average position from 4.7 to 5.2, and both look wrong until you see what changed underneath. The old traffic was overwhelmingly people typing the brand name, and branded searches convert at 20 percent and up. The new traffic includes thousands of discovery searches like burgers near me and food near me, where a good result still only earns three or four percent of the clicks. Adding a large volume of lower converting discovery traffic pulls the blended average down while the total number of clicks goes up 60 percent. We would take that trade every time, and it is the normal shape of restaurant SEO widening beyond a brand.

The name, however they spell it

A distinctive brand name is an asset and a liability at once. These are live Search Console positions for the last six months, and they are the single clearest illustration of what restaurant SEO does for a name people hear before they read.

Eight different spellings, all resolving to the right restaurant at the top of the page, which is restaurant SEO doing the least glamorous and most profitable job it has. The halal question is the same principle applied to a different worry: somebody wanted an answer before they drove over, and the site is the thing that answers it.

And the searches with no name attached

Brand searches prove people remember you. Non brand searches prove you can be found by people who have never heard of you, and that is where a restaurant grows and where restaurant SEO earns its budget.

GA4 traffic acquisition, 8 March to 7 September 2026 against the prior period. Total sessions 34,744 against 22,291.

Every channel up, organic still the biggest

Total sessions reached 34,744 against 22,291, up 56 percent, and the shape of that growth is what good restaurant SEO looks like in GA4. Organic search is the largest single channel at 14,145 sessions against 9,095, up 55 percent, with engagement rate improving from 51.7 to 54.2 percent and average engagement time from 28 to 35 seconds. Direct traffic rose 62 percent to 12,778, which is the quiet signal in this account: direct is what people type when they already know the name, and it grows when everything else is working.

The restaurant SEO number that comes closest to a customer

26,806 Business Profile interactions across six months break down into 11,941 direction requests, 7,945 website clicks, 6,310 menu views and 610 phone calls. Direction requests are the most honest proxy a restaurant has for a real visit, because almost nobody asks Google to navigate somewhere they are not going. That single number is the case for treating the profile as a core surface rather than a listing you claim once and forget.

What we are not claiming

There is no order value or revenue tracking wired into GA4 on this account, and online orders run through third party platforms that do not report back into it. So this page reports actions, not sales: clicks, directions, calls, menu views. They are all real, all verifiable in Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile, and none of them is a substitute for a till receipt. Connecting order tracking so the next version of this page can report revenue is the current priority.

The FOG Digital Marketing team are amazing at creating websites and SEO. We have received many compliments about how professional our website looks.

What Comes Next

Where this account goes from here

Three things, in order. First, order tracking, so clicks and directions can be tied to actual tickets rather than reported as actions. Second, click through rate work on the discovery searches: holding position 5.9 on burgers near me at 3.1 percent means the title and the profile snippet are leaving clicks on the table against results ranked below. Third, more neighbourhood coverage, because the UTSA and Medical Center pages proved the model and San Antonio has a dozen more pockets like them.

The pattern here is not unique to food. A plumber, a landscaper and a moving company all run the same sequence: own your name, build the pages the searches actually deserve, then make the Business Profile close. Restaurant SEO just runs it faster, because hunger is the shortest buying cycle there is.

FAQs

Restaurant SEO questions we get asked

Does a restaurant really need a website when Google, Uber Eats and DoorDash exist?

Yes, and this account is the argument. The Business Profile produced 26,806 interactions, but 7,945 of those were people clicking through to the website, and 11,100 more arrived from Search results the profile never touched. The delivery platforms take a cut and own the customer. Restaurant SEO builds the channel you keep, and it feeds the profile the credibility the profile needs to win the map pack.

Why does ranking for misspellings of the brand name matter so much?

Because a name people hear before they read is a name people guess at. ZOJAH Burger draws real traffic from eight different spellings, and every one of them resolves to the restaurant at roughly position 1.1. If a competitor or an aggregator had captured zohan burger, several hundred customers a year would have landed somewhere else. It is the cheapest win available in restaurant SEO and almost everyone skips it.

What is the most useful metric for a restaurant, given orders happen offline?

Direction requests. Almost nobody asks Google to navigate somewhere they are not going, so 11,941 direction requests over six months is the closest honest proxy for arrivals. Calls and menu views come next. Sessions and impressions matter as leading indicators, but a restaurant should judge its restaurant SEO on the actions that only happen when someone is about to eat.

How long does restaurant SEO take to show results?

Brand and menu queries move fastest, often inside a quarter, because there is little competition for your own name. Neighbourhood terms like burgers near UTSA take longer, and city wide terms like best burgers in San Antonio take longest because every restaurant in town wants them. ZOJAH Burger holds position 3.2 for best smash burger san antonio, which took sustained work rather than a single launch.

Should the menu be a PDF or a web page?

A web page, always. This menu earned 46,887 impressions and 1,263 clicks at an average position of 2.6 as a standalone page. A PDF cannot rank properly, cannot be read comfortably on a phone, cannot link to ordering and cannot be updated without replacing a file. The menu is usually the second most valuable page on a restaurant site and restaurant SEO treats it that way.

Do reviews actually affect rankings, or just persuasion?

Both, and for a restaurant the persuasion is the bigger half. A 4.7 average from 2,484 reviews is why a searcher picks this listing over the one above it in the map pack. Volume and recency also feed local prominence. The practical answer is that reviews and restaurant SEO are not separate projects; the profile that earns the click is the profile that keeps ranking.

What does falling click through rate mean if clicks are going up?

It usually means the site started appearing for searches it never appeared for before. Branded searches convert above 20 percent; discovery searches like food near me convert at one or two. Adding a lot of the second kind drags the blended average down while the actual number of visits rises. On this account CTR fell from 11.2 to 7.3 percent while clicks rose 60 percent, which is a good trade, not a problem.
